We live in a noisy world. Traffic, concerts, construction and even loud appliances can all contribute to sound levels that may harm our hearing. While not all noise is dangerous, prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 decibels (dB) can lead to permanent hearing damage.
While most people know that loud noise can damage hearing, fewer can recognize when a noise hits the threshold for hearing damage. That’s where decibel meters come in.
What Does a Decibel Meter Do?

A decibel meter is a device, or more commonly today, a smartphone app, that measures the intensity of sound in your surroundings. These tools use your phone’s microphone and audio software to capture sound data and calculate a dB or dBA reading. The “A” in dBA refers to A-weighted measurements, which are adjusted to reflect how our ears perceive different frequencies.
The higher the decibel, the more likely it is to damage your hearing.
Are Decibel Meter Apps Reliable?
Many decibel meter apps provide accurate, real-time readings that are useful for everyday awareness. iPhone users, for instance, have access to the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. It’s known for its reliability, partly because it takes advantage of Apple’s consistent hardware and software design.
Android users may not have access to the NIOSH app, but there’s no shortage of alternatives in the Google Play Store.
When Should You Use a Decibel Meter?
Think of your decibel meter as a pocket-sized safety tool. Here are a few scenarios where it comes in handy:
- Attending live music events at Friends On The Hill
- Watching action-packed movies in the theater
- Hosting or attending parties
- Testing the noise level of new appliances like blenders, treadmills or HVAC systems
- Commuting or walking near heavy traffic
If your meter shows a reading at or above 85 dB, it’s a good idea to act. Lower the volume if possible or wear ear protection. High-fidelity earplugs are a great option to protect your hearing without sacrificing sound clarity.
Stay Proactive About Your Hearing
A decibel meter app won’t cost you anything, but it can be incredibly valuable in raising awareness about daily noise exposure. It empowers you to make informed choices about when and how to protect your ears.
