If you prefer to explain their hearing loss yourself, use clear, age-appropriate language to help them understand. Be open when answering their questions, and don’t hesitate to admit if you don’t have all the answers.
Share Your Feelings
You probably have feelings about your child’s hearing loss, and that’s okay. Instead of bundling up your emotions, share them with your child. Not only will sharing your feelings make you feel better, but it will encourage your child to feel comfortable sharing their own thoughts and emotions.
Talk About Treatment Options
Treatment options for childhood hearing loss vary depending on the type, severity and underlying cause. If your child’s hearing loss is permanent, their audiologist may suggest one of the following:
- Hearing aids. Hearing aids collect and amplify the frequencies your child struggles to hear. They’re non-invasive and can be removed nightly.
- Cochlear implants. Cochlear implants directly stimulate the auditory nerve to bypass the damaged part of the ear. They require surgery and are generally only recommended for people with profound inner ear hearing loss.
- Speech and language therapy. Speech and language therapy is often used in combination with hearing aids or cochlear implants to help your child learn how to process speech.
